I think of the psalms as David’s prayer journal and wonder if Psalm 23 is David reminding himself of God’s promises and who He is.
The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.
He promises to provide and always care for me.
Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. Isaiah 46:4
He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams.
When I trust Him, my striving ceases.
Then Jesus said, “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
He renews my strength.
Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary. Isaiah 40:31
He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to His Name.
Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105
Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid for you are close beside me.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18
Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.
He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young. Isaiah 40:11
You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies.
“I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of Heaven;” Matthew 8:11-12
You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. Revelation 21:4
My loving Father promises to never leave or forsake me.
He tells me not to worry or fear.
He is my refuge and strength; my strong tower.
His grace is sufficient – it is all I need.
