Lose to Gain

January 16, 2019

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes from faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith Philippians 3:8-9

Financial security.

Home ownership.

All loss.

Love God, love my neighbor as myself.

Forgive seventy times seven.

Love enemies.

Sell all I have and give to the poor.

“Come, Follow Me.”

It’s a heart thing.

Water walking isn't sure or secure. Click To Tweet

It’s choppy and uncertain.

Disease of self where comfort is king.

Desires become messiah.

Self slave.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

First things first.

The Lord adds and gives.

I worry and whine.

Grudgingly give.

In His grace, He calls it sacrifice.

Freedom follows.

Obstacle removed.

Intimacy improvement.

Lose to gain.

Faith is more dance than walk.

Fluid movement.

Close and far.

Dip, spin, twist and turn.

In-explainable adventure.

Suffering and sacrifice.

Put down, pick up.

Dying and living.

Things that get in the way of my Savior are loss.

Choose this day who and what I serve.

The timeless invitation remains the same.

“Come, Follow Me and I will send you out to fish for people.”

Am I willing to give up everything to follow or am I more concerned with the things of this world?

Details designed to distract.

Lead me away.

I’m okay, you’re okay.

So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:33

Renouncing all I have doesn’t mean becoming homeless.

It isn’t doing the “right” things or following rules.

It means there’s nothing I won’t give up or walk away from for Christ – including my house.

A heart consecrated to Him.

My security rests in salvation.

In light of His great love, nothing means more.

Not my husband.

Not financial security or a job.

Not my son, family or home.

It’s all loss for the sake of knowing Him.

Love in action.

His life for mine.

Worship in spirit and truth.

A heart divided cannot stand or serve two masters.

And He said to all, “If anyone would come after Me, let Him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Luke 9:23

He said to all.

Deny self.

Take up my cross – the one crafted just for me.

His grace is sufficient.

The wages of sin is death.

The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, my Lord.

Count the cost.

Consider it loss.

Follow and fish.

Father God, Lord Jesus, Forgive me. Forgive me for putting people and things before You. Help me to trust You to provide what I need. Show me anything in my life that keeps me from You. Thank you for loving me. Thank you that Your grace is sufficient – I don’t have to be perfect. I only need to keep seeking and allow You to do Your work in me. Thank you for the people, places and things that bring me ever closer to You. You are faithful, good, trustworthy and true. In Your Precious, Holy Name, Amen.

More about Liz

I'm a free spirit. I hate rules and legalism. I love art and nature, music, the beach and dogs. I like to garden, take pictures and read. I tend to speak my mind and have a rip-the-band-aid -off approach to life. (Brace yourself, this might hurt.)

    1. Hi Liz. This is such a hard message and you expressed it beautifully. It’s not easy giving up things that matter to us. I love your prayer and I prayed it along with you. Blessings to you today.

      1. Hey Stephen! Your words bless me…this is where God has me – moving and changing so many things. I want to hang on for dear life but He’s teaching me about letting go and trusting Him. It isn’t an easy thing to post either but it all belongs to Him – this blog too. I have to remember my part is to write and post…He assembles the audience. Your comment and support bless me – I pray the Lord also blesses you and your writing endeavors for Him. Good stuff brother!
